Becoming Familiar with Collage

Pre-K started their collage unit by exploring how they can arrange different geometric shapes to create a picture or design and then glue them down to make a collage.  We learned how artists, when making a collage, often choose to place their shapes far apart, touching or overlapping.  Our young artists practiced these motions with their hands first and transferred that to their paper.  Below are some of our first collages we did this year in the art room! Some of the work is bordering on representational and tring to show cars, hou while others are more non objective/interesting design.  If we had time left, students practiced identifying geometric shapes in the book I Spy Shapes in Art, by Lucy Micklethwait and Museum Shapes, by the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
