TP Scarab Clay Reliefs

Scarab from Stamp/Seal

Scarab from Manuscript

Transitional Primary students learned how a relief is a type of sculpture you can only view from the front. We viewed a variety of Egyptian reliefs and discussed how we thought they were created.  Next, we examined Egyptian scarabs (beetles) which showed up on ancient manuscripts, necklaces, and inside tombs because of the belief they helped ward off evil. We even spent a day doing some observational drawings of plastic bugs before we started with clay.  Finally,  we created our own scarab reliefs by learning how to make a slab and then adding on our own bug with a score and slip technique and finishing off with some different textures.
