First Grade Collage Exploration

For the first unit for first grade we will be looking at the painted quilts of Faith Ringgold and discussing how we can use art to tell stories.  For the first day we were able to have some collage exploration with focus put on overlapping, touching, and far apart shapes.  Some artists even discovered that although they did not have scissors they were able to tear their paper to change the shape. It is amazing to see the natural design sense young children have without being prompted.  Many choose to create symmetrical collages even before knowing what it means.
