The first unit for kindergarten this year is collage and we have been examining the work from artist Paul Klee. For this lesson we looked at his painting Castel and Sun and students noticed how Klee used many geometric shapes and combined them to form a picture. We became familiar with three art terms to describe how artists can compose their collages which were overlapping, far apart, and touching. When we got started we first spent time arranging our shapes into many different pictures and once we felt confident we picked our favorite composition and glued them down. Some artists were able to turn triangles and circles into ice cream cones while others created angry birds!
