To head off our Monster drawing, collage, and painting unit we read the famous Where The Wild Things by Maurice Sendak and discussed different characteristics on the monsters such as sharp teeth, horns, and scaly skin. We dug a little deeper by examining the characters in Sarah Fanelli’s Mythical Monsters of Ancient Greece to give us even more ideas for our own monsters. Many students were fascinated to see creatures with multiple heads and wings. Students started out creating a sketch of their monster and then used an oil pastel and watercolor resist technique to make a painting.

Next, students created these colorful paper bag puppets through collaging of painted paper, plain paper, and paper strips, which they folded to created arms, antennas and more. The last step was drawing these puppets from observation, which we learned was drawing what artists see vs. drawing from imagination.
