Symmetrical Insects Monoprints

As first grade started learning about symmetry with their classroom teachers, they were able further reinforce the concept in the art studio.  We started off by examining several images which show examples of symmetry in nature.  Next, we explored making symmetrical monoprints and became familiar with basic printmaking vocabulary which included what a monoprint , plate, and print is.

After we had some practice, we created these insect monoprints the following week.  The mental challenge of creating monoprints – and of printmaking in general - is to avoid thinking of drawing or painting, and to allow the printing process to complete the image in a natural, unforced way.
