Kindergarten Texture Collage

As our kindergarteners are nearing the end of their exciting collage unit, we have been learning about TEXTURE.  We described texture as HOW SOMETHING FEELS.  Next, we had a discussion on different textures we see in the world around us, such as prickly, bumpy, smooth, rough, and slick.   The first day students were given bumpy and smooth paper to create a picture or design. The bumpy corrugated paper quickly became boats, roofs, and houses.   The second day students were able to use fluffy and slick (laminated paper) to create a different collage. Some of the young artists used the fluffy yarn as fur for their animals while others were more into overlapping and layering the different textures to make an interesting composition.  Each day that we were cutting out shapes we would decide if they were geometric or free form (shapes we see in nature) shapes.  We even applied this to an artwork by Paul Klee.  Coming up, we will get to use all of our textures to create our people puppets, as we learn about the shapes that make up a person.
