Our third grade artists started off the year learning about
Weavings. We examined a few traditional Navajo
weavings and discussed how many had earth tone colors as well as geometric
shapes and lines. We had a conversation about
functional art and how the function of these weavings changed over time as they
became more popular and were made to export to other places. Additionally, we learned weaving vocabulary
such as the loom, warp, and weft. Once students got back to their seats they
were able to make their own looms which also acted as the warp by cutting
different types of wacky lines. The
finished it up by using strips as their weft and gluing them down. Some artists choose to make patterns while
others just used colors they liked and organized it in an interesting way. We also had a lot of good practice using rulers!
